A link between Hull & District Anglers' Association and Hull Wyke under 14s rugby league squad has led to the young players going straight from their Saturday morning training sessions to the Brough Fishery Complex where they have received some expert tuition from Hull's ADB licensed coaches. The first session saw 19 youngsters given a three-hour coaching session in catching ide, roach, rudd and perch using a simple three-metre whip set-up.
On Saturday 10 July, they were scheduled to fish a two-hour match starting at 1.30pm. However, a nasty accident on the rugby training ground had resulted in Will Jubb (see earlier News Story) injuring his ankle quite badly. Apologising for their late arrival, Will's dad said "sorry we're late, but I think that Will's broken his leg; but he still wanted to come fishing, so we've delayed taking him to hospital until after the match".
Thus, ankle suitably encased in a swathe of bandages, Will joined the others in the draw for pegs. Fortified by a couple of paracetamols and with his leg propped up on a spare seat box, Will was never going to achieve his full potential. However, he was only beaten into second place by a very creditable performance by Dylon Osbourne.
The final results were:
1. Dylon Osbourne 3lb 0oz
2. Will Jubb and Kieran Moran 2lb 10oz
3. Thomas Jubb and Lennon Walker 2lb 2oz
So a good day was had by (nearly) everyone.
(Will's leg proved not to be broken, but he had suffered severe ligament damage which will keep his leg in plaster for several weeks. So no rugby for the time being, but that should just leave more time for fishing).
