Wolfreton’s William Jubb breaks lake record

Date added: 06-06-2010

Hull & District Anglers’ Association (HDAA) has gained a reputation for its big carp fisheries and since taking on the former British Aerospace waters at Brough has been developing the 20 acre Osprey Lake on the site as an addition to its already impressive portfolio.

Carp stocked at one to three pounds into the water in 2006-07 have thrived in the nutrient-rich water with several having now grown to over 20lbs in weight. However, in the early hours of Sunday morning, 30 May, the lake record was raised to new heights by a fish of 28lb 6oz caught by William Jubb, a year 8 pupil at Wolfreton School and Language College, East Yorkshire.

Will has been a regular attendee at the Angling in Schools sessions that Brian Skoyles and John Mitchell have delivered to pupils at Wolfreton School and, as a direct result and because of the interest he showed, he was introduced to Derek Pye who is the HDAA Fisheries Officer and big carp catcher par excellence. Derek was very impressed by Will’s attitude and willingness to learn, and invited him, his friend Ellis Clark and their fathers to join him for a weekend’s carp fishing.

Starting on Friday evening, 28 May, Derek demonstrated some of the ‘rigs’ he used and showed Will how to use a lead weight and marker float to ‘feel’ the bottom of the lake and locate likely carp-feeding spots. With the likely spots identified and the rigs tied to the line and baited, it was just a case of casting out and waiting.

It wasn’t until 4.20am on Saturday morning that Will’s bait was taken and, after a lively scrap, he netted a personal best carp; a full-scaled common weighing 16lb 8oz. After carefully weighing the fish and returning it to the water, Will was too excited to go to sleep. He stayed wide awake keenly watching his rods for another ‘take’. However, it was over three hours before anything else happened. Then, at 7.35am, he hooked another fish resulted in him breaking his own personal best with a leather carp of 17lb exactly.

But Will’s not just a keen angler; he’s also an enthusiastic rugby player. So, after a spot of breakfast eaten alfresco, he was off to take his place as hooker for his local under-14 rugby league team. Match over (and won), it was back to Osprey Lake, but it wasn’t until 3.30am on Sunday morning before there was any more action on Will’s rods. As soon as he picked up the rod and bent into the fish he knew it was a ‘big un’. The fish soon became entangled in a mass of weed, but showing a level of skill and patience that belied his youth, he played the fish to the net where it needed the combined efforts of him and Derek to lift it from the water and onto the unhooking mat.

As soon as he parted the weed that engulfed the fish, he could see that this was bigger than anything he had caught before, but as the weigh sling took the strain even he was astonished to see the pointer on the dial move round to 28lb 6oz – a new lake record, another milestone in the development of Osprey Lake and an unforgettable weekend for everyone, especially Will Jubb.
